Five Foods You Should Never Store in the Refrigerator

A modern refrigerator is a remarkable asset in every household for the storage of food. A fridge is helpful in preserving food and maintaining the quality of food you intend to consume later. You can refrigerate most foodstuffs, but some will lose texture, taste, and other properties if stored. Others will even spoil at a faster rate if kept in the refrigerator. Cold food may appear fresher, but some may lose their nutritional value. Here are some of the foods you should avoid storing in your refrigerator.

Bread

Storing bread in the fridge does not make it last longer or remain fresh. The cold temperatures cause the starch to solidify at a faster rate than room temperatures, which speeds up hardening.  Always store the bread at room temperature and in a dry place or on the counter. Refrigerating accelerates spoilage and the bread can even develop mold if kept for days in the refrigerator.

Tomato

Tomatoes if stored in refrigerator lose flavor. They also become mushy due to the cold temperatures.  To enhance ripening, save them in a cool place away from onions. The coldness in the fridge stops the ripening. It also interferes with the texture of the tomatoes.

Coffee

To retain the flavor, quality, and the freshness of coffee beans, it is advisable to store them in a cool and dry place. Keeping your ground coffee in the refrigerator will lead to loss of taste since it takes odors from the other foodstuff in the fridge.

Potatoes

Store your potatoes in a cool, dry place. Refrigerating potatoes cause the starch to change into sugar faster, which eventually alters texture and taste.

Avocado

To accelerate the ripening of the fruit, keep it at room temperature. Cold air in the fridge delays the process of maturation.
