The Downside of Food Bans

Different varieties of food and beverages have been banned for encouraging a healthier eating that helps in reducing some risks of disease and also benefits the environment. Studies show that effect of prohibition of sales of some specific food and beverages may even surprise you. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration had recently banned Trans fats that can be helpful in reducing the heart diseases. This ban may and may not be effective.
The Food manufacturers are replacing Trans fats with high saturated tropical oil as well as the interesterified oils. Studies suggest that the interesterified oils can affect the blood lipids and metabolism of glucose like Trans fats in a negative way. The Trans foods were introduced for providing healthier alternatives to the tropical oil. The outcome of Trans fats on the public’s health is unknown but a better approach can provide incentive to those consumers who have the most produce of whole grains and limited processed foods that contains trans or saturated fats.
The publication in the Journal Social Science and Medicine has examined all the effects of the landmark policy that had restricted opening of fast food restaurants in some specific areas of Los Angeles. The researches wanted to reduce the number of fast – food eateries so that they can improve the food environment and encourage a healthier living so that the rate of obesity gets reduced. However, it was surprising to know that the results were just the opposite. The number of people here started to increase more than those countries where there was no restriction on supply of fast foods.
