The Famous Irish Soda Bread

Ever since the early 19th century, the soda bread has been a staple for many households in Ireland since baking soda was made commercially available for anyone to purchase. This might be down to the fact that for it to be made, one will require very little ingredients which are usually present in the house and those are flour, salt, buttermilk as well as baking soda. So what exactly is Irish soda bread? Well it’s a basically a loaf that usually has craggy crust which are browned beautifully and nice chew. Below are the ingredients that you will require for Irish soda bread.

• 1 lb. (3-1/2 cups) unbleached all-purpose flour; more as needed
• 3/4 tsp. baking soda
• 1/2 tsp. table salt
• 1-1/2 to 1-3/4 cups buttermilk

Start off by positioning you rack in a central position of the oven, after which you should heat up the oven to 450 degrees F. Proceed by lightly flouring a large rimmed baking sheet.

Next sift all the dry ingredients into a large mixing bowl. After you are done with sift process proceed to making a well at the center of the bowl and pour in one and a half buttermilk. Star properly until the point when the dough appears to barely come together. Key here is to ensure that you don’t overdo it, once you feel its soft stop.

Take the dough and place it on a surface which has been well floured. After the top has been floured invert it so that the bottom can also be floured. Take a thin sharp knife and a cut through the dough about a quarter inch deep.

After you are done transfer to the prepared baking sheet that you had prepared and bake for 15 to 17 minutes.
