New hemp oil is new alternative for cooking

Today, more than ever, we are beginning to educate ourselves on what we put in our bodies. We are re-discovering so much of the natural goodness in plants, herbs, oils and more. One of the newest growing foodie trends comes perhaps from an unexpected source - Hemp oil.

No, you won’t have to live in Colorado or Washington to experiment with hemp oil in your food. Hemp oil has some amazing benefits, but getting high is not one of them. It has long been used for beauty care products, especially soaps. But its good fatty acids and omega oils make it a pretty wise choice for consumption as well.

Cooking with hemp oil does have its limitations. You can’t use it at temperatures above 120 degrees Fahrenheit, or all of the good nutrients will disappear and leave behind a funny taste. So while you won’t be able to fry chicken in it, you could make a tasty salad dressing, or put it in hummus or a smoothie. Studies are suggesting that it could give olive oil some tough competition in flavor and nutrition.

If you want to experiment with hemp oil, buy a small quantity at first. It doesn’t have a long shelf life and you need to keep it in the refrigerator and it will stay good for 2-4 months. The purest form of hemp oil is unrefined and cold-pressed. Make sure to check on the label so that you know you are getting the best oil.

Before going all in, there are a few things you will want to consider. Eating too much hemp oil can have a laxative effect. Also people who are on blood-thinners, or who have prostate cancer should avoid consuming it unless they have cleared it with a doctor.
